Arrow Lightinging Designer.
Arrow's Lighting Designer is a cloud-based application platform to design complete LED lighting system solutions. This integrated design environment combines multiple modules including light sources, secondary optics, power supplies, connectors, heat sinks and boards to develop a system solution. With built-in design guidelines, simulation and analytical engines, and a BOM module, engineers can get quick results and access to a wide portfolio of products from various component manufacturers, all in a web-based environment.
Arrow Electronics is a global provider of products, services and solutions to industrial and commercial users of electronic components and enterprise computing solutions, with 2013 sales of $21.4 billion. Arrow serves as a supply channel partner for over 100,000 original equipment manufacturers, contract manufacturers and commercial customers through a global network of more than 460 locations in 58 countries and is listed on the New York stock exchange.
The software is quite sophisticated, e.g. it can provide a 3D rendering of the heat sink configuration, a thermal simulation of the chosen design, ROI projections compared to given existing solutions, etc.
Usefulness for Luminaire Manufacturers
The Arrow Lighting Designer appears to be suitable for relatively inexperienced luminaire manufacturers who can live with limited freedom of design in favour of ease of use. The biggest constraint is the fact that the tool is provided by a supplier. Thus, the user is limited to the range of products of that supplier. It is focused on the combination of ready to use components leaving relatively little room for eco-innovation.
